The Challenge: Carmine's, a popular Italian restaurant in Times Square, needed
serious A/V additions for its expansion, with no disruptions to music listening, TV viewing or the dining
experience for customers in the original space.
The Solution: Essential Communications used its extensive experience in A/V installation
logistics to manage a smooth transition.
With its lively approach to family-style Southern Italian cooking and wine, Carmine's (www.carminesnyc.com),
on 44th Street and Broadway, proved to be an extremely popular spot for hungry midtown diners. Their popularity
called for an expansion in 2003 into a large, adjoining space with a new ground floor grand entry lobby, upper
level bar and additional upper level dining areas that would deliver the same high quality audio and video
atmosphere that Essential Communications had installed in the original ground floor dining areas in 1998.
In addition, Essential Communications was also asked to relocate the head end, all while keeping the music
playing on the Bose Loudspeakers powered by QSC Amplifiers and Rane processing. Video flanking the bar was
now upgraded from two 27" CRT TV's to two large 42" plasma screens, plus another 42" plasma screen in the
new upper level bar.
"The Carmine's expansion called for meticulous coordination and logistics," notes David Schwartz,
President of Essential Communications. "Heavy project management and multiple site visits were key.
One of the benchmarks of Essential Communications is attention to detail: We're very conscious not
only of the importance of sound quality in a particular environment, but how the equipment integrates
into that environment. We don't just stick speakers in there and make it sound good, because people
don't want to see speakers. That means being sure to pick the right brand and model of speaker, which
can be a very time-consuming process.
"The ends justify the means, however: the new Carmine's is transparent in its operation, and we've
reduced the amount of A/V service needed. The prior head-end system location was not good for the
electronics because of ventilation issues -- now that system has been moved to a cool environment.
"The expanded Carmine's looks and sounds great, no matter where you're seated, and the staff can focus
on excellent food and service, while the A/V ambience takes care of itself."
