  Description:

The long-awaited uptown addition to the Nobu empire, Nobu Fifty Seven, opened in late summer 2005. Borne out of a partnership of founding chef Nobu Matsuhisa, famed restaurateur Drew Nieporent, Oscar-winning actor Robert de Niro, Meir Teper, and managing partner Richie Notar, Nobu Fifty Seven was designed to be a feast for the senses. Gastronomically, Nobu Fifty Seven features its namesake chef's signature cuisine. Architecturally, the restaurant was given a fluid interior designed by David Rockwell. And sonically, the space was expected to truly shine when audio system designer Essential Communications was brought onto the project.

Essential Communications' involvement with Nobu began at this uptown location, and the successful implementation of an aesthetically pleasing, dynamic sound system there would eventually lead to Essential Communications designing music playback for Nobu Next Door and the original Nobu New York in TriBeCa.

In keeping with Nobu's unforgettable array of flavors, Essential Communications selected a customizable MuMa music management system to provide a menu of musical options in different areas of the Nobu Fifty Seven Restaurant.

But more important than how the system sounded was how it looked -- or more specifically, how it remained invisible to Nobu's clientele. "The sound system had to be hidden to contribute to the visual aesthetic as well as the ambience," Schwartz explains. "We paid painstaking attention to detail to make the speakers invisible. At the main bar, for instance, we installed recessed speakers with custom-made grilles over them. You really can't see a speaker anywhere in the restaurant."

Following the success story at Nobu Fifty Seven, Essential Communications was asked to upgrade the sound system at Nobu Next Door. The seamless integration of audio into these two esteemed restaurants convinced the restauranteurs to at last add music to the original Nobu New York location. Essential Communications rose to the occasion and discretely integrated the first-ever audio system into this landmark restaurant.

"Nobu is another example of a recognized restaurateur with a reputation for ambience coming to Essential Communications to create a solution for their rooms," Schwartz observes. "It's a classy, inspiring space to contribute to, and we're proud to have been a part of it."
